by Paul Egan-Smith article Seven years ago, James and Amanda Stewart were on holiday in the US when they met.
The couple, who have a son, say they “just had the strangest time”.
They met when James was 17.
“He told me about this girl called Ellie, who he’d met at a bar.
We ended up chatting about her and the fact that she was from the States and was going to get married in New York, and then he went on about her mother and how she was going through a difficult time, and that we should go to New York together,” he said.
“I was like, ‘Wow, this is weird.'”
When they finally met, James told Amanda that he was bisexual.
“It was the strangeness of it all,” she said.
Amanda, who works in marketing and is now 28, says she was “struck by the thought of someone like me having sex with someone I don’t know”.
“I think it’s something that you don’t think about or acknowledge until it’s too late, like, oh, my God, I’ve just had sex with this person,” she told the programme.
“You just don’t do it.
You don’t acknowledge it.
It’s the same with someone you love.”
James says he is now open about his sexuality, but is careful not to let his parents down.
“If someone asks me to tell my parents about it, it’s like, OK, OK.
But I don and they don’t.
They’re fine with it,” he told the presenter.
“My mum is more open about it than I am.”

James said that the interview was “really good”.
“We were in a weird place because I was just, I guess, trying to be honest with my parents and try to tell them all what I’m going through, and they’re like, I don, I really don’t want to know.”
Amanda, however, believes that she has been “too timid” to talk about it.
“When I did tell my dad I was bi, it was more like, Oh, yeah, I’m gay and I’m attracted to people of the same gender.
And I was kind of hesitant about it because I knew he’d be like, Yeah, I know,” she explained.
“But I don the whole time.
It really is a weird thing to tell him.”
